Officials said that the seven-day Navratri vacation will be adjusted with the 21-day Diwali vacation. The government has decided that Diwali vacation will now be for 14 days that is from November 11 to November 18.
The new common academic calendar for government universities states that the examination for semester one, three and five will be held soon after the Navratri festival and will have to be completed before 31, while the remaining semester will begin after Diwali from November 28.
Education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said, “The government is mulling over the possibility for declaring Navratri vacation in schools as well as colleges. We are examining the possibility of such a vacation.”
Anju Sharma principal secretary, Higher and Technical Education, said, “The academic calendar has been declared to have uniformity in the education system. With the new academic calendar there would be 20 days more of classroom study. We have decided to have Navratri vacation in the colleges.” This is not the first time that such a Navratri vacation has been declared. In 1995, Nalin Bhatt, the education minister in the Keshubhai Patel government had announced the Navratri vacation. However, it was later withdrawn as academicians felt studies were being hampered. However, the student fraternity has a mixed reaction. “As a student who lives in a city away from home, I would really appreciate a longer break as it would help me go home to my family,” said Ipsita Kapoor, a second year B.Design student.
“The 10 days added to the Navratri break could be good because it is the festive season and everyone is in the mood to dance and just relax for a while before settling in for the exams,” said Rahul Parihar, a third year BBA student.
